Parish History

The late Bishop Leo T. Maher established St. Elizabeth Seton on November 10, 1976 and appointed Monsignor Frederick J. Florek as the first pastor. In the early days of the parish, Masses were celebrated outside storefronts, the parish rectory on Manzanita Street and even in parishioners’ homes. On November 11, 1978, the community broke ground for the Parish Center; the building was completed in August of 1979. In January of 1983, Monsignor Alphonsus Moloney followed Monsignor Florek and served ten years as pastor. Our current pastor, Reverend Donald Coleman, arrived in February of 1993.

Since La Costa was a growing area, the community had outgrown the Parish Center. Father Coleman and parish members dreamed and planned for a new worship center. On May 4, 1994, Bishop Robert H. Brom broke ground on the new facility and dedicated the church in December of 1995. Today, St. Elizabeth Seton is the spiritual home for Catholics in southern Carlsbad, CA.

But a parish is more than a beautiful building at a convenient location. Spiritual leadership and friendly people breathe life into a Catholic community. Under the direction of Father Coleman, Deacon Henry Chia and Deacon Dale Fickles, we are blessed to have both at St. Elizabeth Seton.

We invite you to join us at St. Elizabeth Seton to worship God and share fellowship.
